Youth Conference 2007 in the Netherlands, the Dutch Korczak Association started a Ghana working group. Mr. Yakubu Iddrisu from the town of Tamale (Northern region of Ghana) was one of the participants in the Youth Conference and he explained the situation of youngsters and women in that part of the country. During the "Open Stage" in the conference he told us about the activities of the Community Partnership for Youth and Woman Development (CPYWD) in Tamale, and some communities around the town of Tamale.

Yakubu made it clear to us that the pedagogical ideas of Janusz Korczak could be a great inspiration for their work. He "met" Korczak during the workshops, lectures and the informal talks and meetings. Indeed, because the mission and objectives of CPYWD are:

Respect the child as it is

Give a child responsibility

Invite children and youngsters to active participation

Raise their self-esteem and self-confidence

Give young people empowerment

For that reason he invited the Dutch Janusz Korczak association to continue the contacts and cooperation. We accepted this invitation with great pleasure and we started a Ghana working group with young people to give them feed-back, support and to develop together with CPYWD ideas and materials. The "leading lady" of the Ghana working group is Maartje Bos. She worked already for 6 months in the Tamale-project and brought us in contact with Mr. Yakubu. Maartje Bos herself is also representing the Ghana Haarlem Association. So, at the moment we have a strong triangle and the pedagogy of Janusz Korczak is the red thread.

In the meantime the next step was already made. New volunteers went to Tamale and returned with a lot of experiences. They reported and wrote about the continuation and new steps in the project Specially the activities for the after-school program for children and youngsters were successful.

From 6 to 20 October 2008, I had the possibility to visit the project in Tamale myself. I would like to give a short impression.

A good airco bus brings you in 14 hours to Tamale, the regional capital of the Northern Region of Ghana, 220.000 inh., flat and hot but with a lively atmosphere. Here we find the center of the CPYWD-project.

B. Context

How can we describe the present situation of youth and women in this part of the country? The CPYWD manual writes:

As a project interested and specialized in youth development, we observed Ghanaian youth lacking skills that are appropriate for personal development as well as for the development of the environment. Although the education in Ghana is improving, changes take place slowly. To undertake direct action in the field where it is needed, we decided to meet the youth in their own environment and give them the chance to actualize their capacities with an after school program combining learning and having fun.

Development means that something new is added to what already exist to reach a higher level. To invent something new, creativity is demanded. When the new idea is created, it has to be executed. This means that someone has to take the initiative to bring the idea into practice or at least express the idea. When executed, the person has to reflect upon his own actions to be able to improve performance in the future. Although more skills are contributable to development, this program focus on being creative, taking initiative and reflecting upon own actions in order to form a basis on which further development can take place.

The mission of the CPYWD
"To be committed to our vision by being catalyst and innovators working towards the creation of safe, just and sustainable communities on the full and healthy participation of youth and women and adults and to co-create a "practice field" where adults, youth and women can learn together on a lifelong basis, focusing on building partnership to empower themselves, advance community development and strengthen multicultural understanding in Ghana and the communities".

Goals
In attempt to support and complement the efforts of Ghana government, CPYWD works to empower children and young people to be able to take informed decisions and feel responsible for the decisions they take. They are major component of work. We offer young people:

Innovative after school enrichment programs for primary school children and young people of the high schools in and around Tamale

The opportunity to increase access to and participation in education, quality of teaching and learning, and effective management of educational resources

The knowledge, skills and confidence to become self-reliant citizens whose sense of social responsibility propels them ahead.

Activities for young people:

Academic complementary lessons (learning through play approach)

Interactive social programs for young people (5-18 years)

Guided recreational and sporting activities for kids and youth

Life planning education and training for youth and kids (13-19 years)

Youth leadership training.

***

C. The Visits

C-1. Meeting with members of board
One of the first days I had a meeting with some members of CPYWD-board. Some are teachers, some are social workers, others work in business and one is minister of an evangelic church. So, people from different fields in society. They explained me that CPYWD is still young but full of ambitions. Thanks to the all-coordinator and head of the project Mr. Yakubu Iddrisu. On my question: "What is the next step to be done in the project?" They answered unanimous: "We need to focus on awareness of the youth for their place in society and in their personal life and at the same time we have to give them tools to arrange and plan their life. Many of them have a low self-esteem and low self-confidence. We can help them to make next steps and decisions and not to wait in a passive way. With the help of the Dutch volunteers we arrange learning by playing (see below)".

We discussed the need to have a support from the teachers and the families. If children and youngsters remain passive students with no chance for initiative or active participation in the school-community the project can hardly change their attitud. Children receive conflicting messages. For that reason the CPYWD tries to involve also the teachers from primary schools and Junior High Schools. They are invited to attend meetings and workshops. Family support is much more difficult, but it is in the planning.

During this meeting I explained the possibility in Holland to support them. The Janusz Korczak Association together with the Ghana Haarlem Association can arrange together with the partners in Ghana a strong triangle of cooperation.

Talks with Miss. Sanne Peters, the volunteer working for several months already in the project, made clear that the process of change is going step by step. We shouldn’t be impatient and not expect too much. But she noticed that the learning-through-play approach is doing well and it was proved when a new group from another community started from the beginning. The progress of the already existing groups was obvious compared with this starting group. So, that is hopeful and motivates to go on.

In general groups of youngsters in the community are rather stable, but when children are needed to work in the fields they can or will not attend the meetings. But it is understandable.

Miss. Sanne Peters, the Dutch volunteer, said that she and her colleagues try to involve the teachers to work in another way, adopting alternative approaches to teaching. But because of the lack of good teachers who studied in a teacher training colleges it often happens that young people coming from a senior high school, after a short course, are put as teachers, in the school in front of more than 50 pupils. They try to survive and have no good materials, know-how about the development of children or didactic skills to realize interactive learning. After visiting several schools (Primary and Junior high schools) I have to say that her conclusion is true.

C-2. Meeting with adults working in the CPYWD-project
I had the opportunity to offer a workshop/lecture for 32 adults, people working as facilitators for the after-school activities and also some teachers from Public Primary schools with whom CPYWD works.

We started with an introduction to the life and work of Janusz Korczak. We discovered that Korczak’s idea’s about the autonomy and active participation of children come close to the objectives of their work with youngsters. Dr Joop Berdings’s article “Participation in the classroom, the inspiration of Janusz Korczak” was the guideline for this lecture and workshop. But for them, working with youngsters in the after-school program, we also focused on the issue participation and citizenship. Children need to learn that the rights of citizens also require responsibility. In order to learn these responsibilities children and youngsters need to engage in collaborative activities with other persons, including those who are older and more experienced than themselves. For this reason CPYWD activities in the communities are very important. When adults recognize children’s capacities and when they give them step by step more responsibility and tasks, they will grow to active members of society.

C-3. Meeting with young people
CPYWD also organized a workshop for youngsters (14-20 years old) from Tamale and some communities in the neighbourhood. These youngsters are already for a longer time participants of the after-school program offered by CPYWD.

About 47 people attended this meeting and we did some activities focused on group work and active participation.

The second workshop with the pupils" title="The second workshop with the pupils" border="0">They got individual and group task and we discussed the impact of these workshops on their personal feelings and involvement. Many of these youngsters have a low self-esteem and feel not free to express themselves. Cooperation and finding a creative solution in problem solving is a weak point too. Learning-through-playing is for them the best approach.

The workshops, taking many hours with a break for meal and drinks, were a big success. Also some quests (teachers and facilitators) gave positive reactions and comments.

C-4. A visit to after-school activities in a small community (Katariga)
Together with Elisha, one of the volunteers and staff-members of CPYWD, we went to a small village, north of Tamale called Katariga. Elisha (facilitator) planned to work that day with children, 8 and 9 years old, of the village school. We arrived a little bit early and school didn’t finish yet. I had the opportunity to visit some lessons. First impression was the overcrowded room with 56 children. Little wooden school seats, three children in one seat. No space to write or to move, a lack of good materials and books, Teachers who demand silence and don’t give opportunities for children to ask questions. Children are passive and there is no space or willingness for group work. For these children CPYWD organizes after-school activities using Learning-through-play concept.

In these activities children are invited to work in little groups and they can show their own creativity. Elisha took the children to the play-ground of the school and introduced an interesting exercise. Children were standing in two circles, an inner circle and an outer circle. Each child of the inner circle had behind her/him a child of the outer circle. On a sign of Elisha the children of the inner circle had to "‘fall" backwards trusting the child behind her/him to catch them.

Why such a game? It gives the children feelings of trust, experience of cooperation, a more relaxed physical feeling and last but not least the experience of a common class activity.

Elisha continued the games in the classroom. Again the children had to work in little groups on simple tasks. Unfortunately there were not enough materials, (like memory and jig-saw puzzles) for so many children. There were too many children in one group and many children had to wait for their turn. Due to the strict discipline and the dutifulness of the children there was no chaos. But this kind of organization or setting is not so effective though the enthusiasm of the children was striking. They like these kind of learning-through-play.

Conclusion: More materials and facilitators for learning-through-play are needed as well as training in working with big groups.

C-5. Talks with officials from the G.E.S. (Ghana Educational Service)
As said before, the professional level of the teachers is sometimes dramatically low; young and not well trained in an institute. The need for special courses for them, focused on the psychological development of children and good didactic is very high. It was just this point of discussion we had with two representatives of the Ghana Educational Service in Tamale. These representatives were the Circuit supervisors of education. The GES is the local branch of the Ministry of Education in Ghana. They endorse this huge problem. They explained the complexity of the educational problems in the country. Overcrowded classes, lack of materials, low salaries, neglected buildings, and last but not least, the low professional level of the teachers.

During this open talks and discussion a new initiative unfolded. Perhaps a pilot project (6 schools) to be managed by CPYWD, the Dutch Janusz Korczak Association and supported and monitored by the Ghana Education Service in Tamale is an option. We can start from the already existing contacts CPYWD have with the six schools (after-school program). We will work it out.

C-6. Blessed by the chief
My visit to Tamale ended in a very special and unforgettable way.Mr Yakubu Iddrisu had organised for Miss Sanne Peters (one of the Dutch volunteers) and me a meeting in one of the communities north of Tamale. It was planned as meeting for children and youngsters, coming from 4 little villages. When we arrived after a beautiful ride through the savannah landscape more than 250 children were sitting in a big circle and little by little the adults from the villages joined them. At least more than 300 people attended the function. Women dressed in beautiful coloured robes. Many of them with a little child carried in a cloth on the back. After a while, drums and bells approached and when they came closer and finally entered the circle we saw the 4 chiefs of the communities, dressed in traditional costumes, between them.

Chairs stood ready and they took their place with dignity. Everybody kept silent. Mr. Yakubu after introducing Sanne Peters and me opened the meeting and explained why everybody was invited. He stressed in his speech the meaning of youth in a community. He did an appeal on active participation and he told the parents to stimulate activities and initiatives of their children. He also said how important play is for the development of the child.

Then, the drums and bells again and we could enjoy a real African dance by an older man, one of the important elderly people of the village. Followed by a group of dancing boys dressed in ladies-skirts and little bells around their waist (unfortunately the original skirts don’t exist anymore). Although the dressing up was a little bit strange, the dance itself was amazing and original. This dance is traditionally known as "baamaaya".

Then suddenly, after this dance, the man with the biggest drum approached to me and invited me to dance in the circle on their rhythm. One second I hesitated, but refusing would have been a shame and perhaps offending. So, I jumped in the circle and did my utmost best to look alike the dancing old man. You cannot imagine the cheers, shouting and laughter that resounded among all the children and adults. It should have looked like a dancing, idiot, white old, bold alien.

Looking back at the pictures my friends made, I must say it was like that. But everybody congratulated me and I saved my face.

The meeting ended with a big surprise for me. The chief of the village said: "I should like to say some words" and he addressed to us. In his own language (Yakubu translated) he stressed how the 4 villages were honoured to have Sanne and me as guests from Holland, supporting the projects CPYWD is doing in the communities. He offered me the title of honoured citizen (Zisung-naa) of his village. I received in a short ceremony 5 cola nuts handed in a coloured cloth. I was so touched that I couldn’t find words to say at that very moment.

For me it was the most emotional moment of my stay in Ghana. Later I went to the four chiefs to talk with them and to express my gratitude and feelings. The meeting ended with a prayer of a referent minister of a community Baptist Church.

D. The camp was held in Pirenópolis, near Brasilia, in the Central region of Brasil. 24 children, 12 from the north and 12 from the south took part with 8 educators and 5 people from Vaga Lume staff. The Dutch-Russian “Nash Dom” camps served as a model [Report]. Sylvia Guimaraes sent us a short full colour report.

The Vaga Lumes Network Program (Translator’s note: Vaga Lume is the Portuguese word for “firefly”), carried out by the Vaga Lume Association since 2005, has as its objective to promote cultural exchange among children from the different regions of Brazil, encouraging the development of reading and writing, as well as integration among children.

In 2008, two groups were communicating between the states of São Paulo and Pará. The Anchieta Project, an NGO located in the Grajaú section of the low-income outskirts of São Paulo, with four public schools from the small town of Castanhal, Pará; and the privately owned Oswald School, located in the Vila Madalena section of São Paulo, which corresponded with two public schools in the rural area of the town of Soure, Pará.

Altogether, 1,600 children and over 60 educators from the two states participated. During the school year, the students communicated from a distance by means of two exchanges of materials: during the first semester, they talked about the topic “our environment,” and in the second semester they sent their reactions to the materials, commenting on their cultural and environmental similarities and differences. The materials are highly varied, each teacher working in the classroom with his/her students in keeping with their grade level, encouraging creativity and producing individual and group letters, scale models, crafts, games, etc.

The initial projects on the topic “our environment” were exchanged in person during the Integration Camp of the Vaga Lumes Network held during the last week of July in Pirenópolis, Goiás, at the IPEC EcoCenter, which has a reference facility for education and sustainability.

Each of the four participating groups (the Anchieta Project, the Oswald School, Soure and Castanhal) had an elected delegation made up of six children (10-12 years old) and two educators. The program and the activities were based on the ideas of Janusz Korczak.

The pedagogical concept, the principles of justice, brotherhood, and equal rights and obligations were put into practice: distribution of tasks, incentives to autonomy, development of responsibility, and conversations reflecting everything the children wanted to debate (inspired by Korczak’s parliament and court); in this way, the children develop the progressive ability to deal with feelings and with conflicts.

On returning home, the children prepared feedback in order to share the results of the Camp experience with their communities and present the materials received. The feedback takes place using exhibitions and cultural events for students, teachers, parents, and others involved in each community. After the feedback, the children prepare the replies to the materials exchanged to finalize communication for the year.

Since its creation, the Vaga Lumes Network Program has achieved the following results: 16,783 students participating from seven institutions in São Paulo and 49 schools from six towns in Amazonia; holding of the first Integration Camp in 2008 with 30 participants; publication of the book “Cartas, Pontes, Novos Horizontes” (Letters, Bridges, New Horizons), which will be launched at the beginning of 2009. The book addresses the exchange of experiences between public schools in the rural zone of the town of Portel, Pará and students from the Vera Cruz School in São Paulo, and comes with a DVD containing a film about the project.

For the Vaga Lumes Network Program, the opportunity for developing expression, especially through writing and speaking, constitutes an important part of human growth.

Sylvia Guimaraes

Janusz Korczak International Newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04116790736879143467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4233595267484952649.post-12931379102321521092008-11-12T23:49:00.004+01:002008-12-22T16:41:41.207+01:00St-Petersburg Festival of Tolerance 2008
The Festival of Tolerance dedicated to Korczak

In St-Petersburg, Russia, the yearly Festival of Tolerance was dedicated this year 2008 to the 130th anniversary of the birth of Korczak. In 1999, the war divided the official army made and a rebellion. The military was Tutsi and the Rebellion was Hutu. There were a lot of massacres. It was just after the Genocide in Rwanda. Today, the Army is mixed of Hutu and Tutsi and there is still a Hutu rebellion that takes roots 30 years ago and that is responsible of the militia attacks the last April. Those acts of violence seem to come to end with the return to the long awaited negotiation process in Bujumbura, but there are still now political prisoners, the opposition parties are intimidated, everyone is armed, there is a huge poverty that increase the tensions, everyday newsletter profile a worst situation in term of human rights, civil rights, social and economic rights. Burundi is still at war, argue Joël Hakizimana who is preparing a Master of Arts in African Studies at the University of Basel. He calls on us through a project he has for Burundi that involves the Janusz Korczak community workers.

The new Janusz Korczak for Burundi (JKB) that Joël presents us the genesis through its touching personal testimony is also for him a call to sustain that hope for its country to access to peace, to democracy and to the respect due to its children, in the continuation of the Janusz Korczak opera.

We are happy to relay that call here and welcome the creation of this award which will certainly encourage the development of research on the promotion of human rights and respect for the child in Burundi.

We are surprised, however, by the conditions of admission (see below) to a small group already privileged (students of the 2nd degree of the State university).

In Africa as elsewhere, the lessons of History teach us that changing attitudes of respect for life and human rights is - unfortunately - not necessarily linked to the intellectual elite or even to the development of culture or to GDP and living standards.

That is why we hope that these restrictive conditions may rapidly evolve to open this new price Korczak to young motivated Burundians already involved as volunteers or social workers in different practical help and assistance to many vulnerable children of this country.

Being able to apply for a solid training the Rights of the Child, which is more inspired by the exemplary action of Dr. Korczak was not a theorist as a great practitioner of education, should not be restricted to an elite.

IJKnews Team

Read the call by Joël Hakizimina:
"JKB Korczak Prize in Burundi, encouraging peace" [PDF 113 Ko, 3 p.]

See also by the same author:

A comic-strip to promote peace through Inter-ethnic dialogue: "Où allons-nous ? – Mbega Tugenda Tuja He?" (Were are we going ?), still relevant, to discover online for the first time, and (separately) its "Notice to readers" translated in English, French and Kirundi [PDF 70 Ko, 2 p.], also avalaible in PDF to be download:

- BD, bilingual in Kirundi and French [PDF 1,26 Mo, 14 p.]

More about the Korczak Prize in Burundi

Eligibilty to JKB and date line
[EN] [PDF 76 Ko, 2 p.]

JKB regulation (in French)
[FR] Réglement du JKB [PDF 148 Ko, 3 p.]

JKB international Organizer and Partners

The Swiss Korczak Association covers the travelling costs Burundi-Switzerland and deserve the Prize, The State University of Burundi seat in Bujumbura, the Institut International des Droits de l’enfant (IDE seat in Sion, Swizerland) covers the cost of the courses and the staying, due to the attention of its Director Mr Jean Zermatten, Vice Chairman of the Children's Committee at the United Nations. Report.

4 years ago I visited the “Projeto Anchieto” for the last time and I was very curious and eager to see how things had been changed. Indeed, it was a big surprise to see the new houses for workshops, circles and games for children. The old, rather primitive ones were removed and the new ones looked very inviting.

I spent two days in the project, one day just observing all kinds of activities. Each morning 150 kids in the age of 3-12 years old, from the poor districts around (the favela) come to Projeto Anchieto to have a good breakfast (beans and rice) and to join different kinds of activities, offered by the group leaders and volunteers. In the afternoon, the same situation with another 150 kids.

The second day we organised a seminar for all adults in the project, even for colleagues from the neighbourhood-projects. But also for the cooks and the guards. Thema: “What can we learn from Janusz Korczak for our daily work with children?”. Thanks to Sylvia and Fabio (coordination, translation, hosting) we had a dynamic and fruitful meeting. People had many positive comments and went home with new inspiration.

I was touched by their approach of children. They offer not only a safe place, but (more over) trust, self respect, and love. The letters on the wall, a quotation of Korczak, is not just a slogan, but for this Projeto Anchieto a reality:

“Children become not human beings in the future, they are already to day”.

Theo Cappon, Dutch Janusz Korczak Association
Janusz Korczak International Newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04116790736879143467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4233595267484952649.post-5231909425601631082008-02-15T16:46:00.011+01:002008-12-23T18:59:38.332+01:00NL: Korczak Int. During this conference there was a strong demand for exchange of practical experiences and ideas in the field of youth-care, education and children’s rights (special youth at risk). The Janusz Korczak Associations in the different countries have their own, specific manner of dealing with the problems of offering support to children and youngsters in threatend situations (in the family, at school, in the peer-group, etc.).

During that conference in 2005 the reciprocal inspiration was highly appreciated and of course also the inspiration by Korczak’s work and ideas. Specially the young educators and group leaders need know-how and encouragement for their daily work in the institutions, schools and children’s houses. Important was (and is) the coherent continuation in their work. That involved in the obligation for more exchange, study and support at the long term.

For this purpose, the conference in 2007 will give an impulse. It will bring together young professionals, volunteers and experts.

We had 8 important pedagogical themes with high relevance for people from so many different countries, like:

Growing up in two cultures; Problems vs positive experiences in a multicultural an multi-ethnic society

The need of education for citizenship; active participation of children in society.

Children and multimedia (TV, internet, video-games, mobile telephones); risks and opportunities; influence of consumer society.

The right of children on sexuality.

Learning for life. How can children be active in their own learning process?

Integration of disabled and chronic ill children in society

The right of children to mental and physical protection

How can we help children and young people to deal with aggression?

People came from Bangladesh, Brasil, Burundi, Czech, France, Germany, Ghana, Holland, India, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Russia, Lithuania, and Poland. We stayed 6 days in a nice house near the beach of the North Sea and the water temperature was perfect for swimming.

If you are thinking of conferences, often boring, long-winded speeches come in memory and passive listeners.

In our case we followed a different approach. For each topic a specialist worked together with the participants in an inter-active way. It were real workshops and the participants put their own experiences and know-how into the workshops. Each workshop took two morning-sessions. So, after two days another topic could be chosen.

Each time people came to us to tell how much such a workshop meant for them. There was a great commitment among the participants. If you live 6 days together, day and night, a strong tie and trust between people is growing.

And than, the afternoon-session. We had the so-called creativity workshops in which we appealed on other aspects of one’s competences, perhaps unknown abilities like music, sculpt, producing animation films, playing in theatre, etc. These discoveries in yourself supported in turn the workshops in the morning sessions.

Very special were the "Open Stages" during the evening. Everybody could present their own specialities or projects. We listened to the story of Colette Charlet from France who worked in the project "Children’s city" in Rosario (Argentina); to Julia Fishman and Vladimir Vyzotski from Kiev who told us about the Jewish Welfare Work "Beitenu"; to Nilufar Karim from Bangladesh who showed us her work in Dacca; to Sylvia Guimaraes from São Paulo who told us about "Projeto Anchieto" in one a the biggest slums (favela) of that city; to Irina Gurvich and Natalia Levkova who explained us the importance of the Center of Tolerance in St-Peterburg, etc. etc. People were very much interested in these stories and the "Open Stages" always went longer than expected and were followed by questions and discussions.

During that week we had some special highlights. First of all the breathtaking concert by Shura Lipovsky, famous singer of Yiddish Songs and storyteller. We had beautiful excursions to the North of Holland (The Dutch struggle against the water) and the old centre of Amsterdam, including a visit to the Anne Frank house. Some of the participants rent a bike and made nice trips to the forest and little villages.

What was the result of the Conference?

First of all we noticed that the 8 themes were recognizable for the participants with so different backgrounds. Topics like "The impact of media on children", "Growing up in a multicultural society" or "The right of children on a harmonious sexuality" proved to be relevant and of current interest everywhere.

Participants received new "baggage" for their work, but in the mean time they contributed to the colleagues their own know-how and experiences. The workshop leaders offered opportunities for this exchange and participants were very pleased with the level of the workshops.

One important thing was the renewed and widened knowledge about Korczak's life and work. Not all participants were familiar with Korczak's ideas and during the workshops, the "open stages", discussions and the morning texts, we tried to connect Korczak with our daily work or study. Besides that we had a reading-centre with books of Korczak, or about Korczak in several languages. Some were surprised that they could read about Korczak in their own language, like "The King of Children" in Russian or texts of Korczak in Portuguese. Students told us that these texts were real eye-openers for them and they discovered how Korczak was ahead of his time.

It is difficult to put into words the personal emotions and experiences of the participants during those days. Mutual recognition of problems but also support, solidarity and connection. Long talks till deep in the night or walks along the beach made one big family of us. A film about a wonderful man. The film goes on the search for a lost time. It is the attempt to come closer to Korczak, and it is a very personal film. He tries a dialogue over the time - always in the knowledge about the terrible guilt of the Germans.

The film shows precious documents: Photographs of Janusz Korczak and his orphanage children, his books and letters. Friends, co-workers and pupils tell about their memories. And the film shows the faces of children - faces from yesterday and faces from today. And places, good places and bad places, the vanished world of Janusz Korczak.

Above all: In the film are quoted his ideas and words, which he wrote about children and for children. It is essential to preserve the memory of Janusz Korczak and his children and their vanished world. Because memory is the mystery of the reconciliation. His work was eventually posthumously adopted by the United Nations as the Convention of the Rights of the Child and the exhibition at the Jewish Museum, Camden Town, shows how his teachings on the treatment of children continue to resonate around the world today.

Korczak, a Polish-Jewish doctor, educator and children’s author, wrote passionately about the subject of children’s rights and his ideas were adopted by the UN in the Children’s Human Rights Declaration of 1959. In honour of his contributions, Pope John Paul II declared, "For the world today, Janusz Korczak is a symbol of true religion and true morality," and UNESCO proclaimed 1979 "The Year of Janusz Korczak" to coincide with the International Year of the Child and the centenary of his birth.

This exhibition reveals how Korczak came to represent the rights of street children and orphans in Warsaw in the early 20th century, introducing the first progressive orphanages for Jewish and Catholic children. He hosted a children’s radio programme, founded the first children’s newspaper and testified on behalf of children in juvenile courts. He is considered to be a Polish national hero and King Matt the First, his story of a child king, is regarded in Poland today with the reverence the British accord Peter Pan.

The exhibition also explores how life in Poland became increasingly difficult for Korczak after German occupation, and how his Jewish orphanage was moved inside the Warsaw Ghetto in 1940. On August 6 1942 he was forced to gather together the 200 orphans in his care to report for deportation. Refusing all offers for his own rescue, Korczak joined the children on the train that would take them to the Treblinka extermination camp, preferring to die with the children under his protection rather than abandon them.

The universalism of Korczak’s message and the effect of his teachings on modern thinking are examined in case studies highlighting the treatment of children today.

For entrance fees and opening hours, please contact the Manchester Jewish Museum on 0161 834 9879 or visit Manchester Jewish Museum’s website.

from our correspondent in London,
Mrs. Sandra Joseph

More
• Archive about it first opening in London, dec. 2006
• The Candem New Journal review, 14 december 2006 [JPEG, 44 ko], avalaible also to your perusal in PDF but pay attention : [888 ko, reserved for fast connexions!]

_______
Please note The ‘Champion of the Child – Janusz Korczak’ exhibition is deshttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifigned to travel.

знакомить с историей, жизнью и творчеством Януша Корчака;

переводить, издавать и распространять его произведения;

Warsaw is put indeed entirely at listening of the children during one full week. The plays are of great quality and there is many meetings and debates on all that relates to Childhood and Youth.

On its new website, you will learn that The International Festival of Theatres for Children and Young People "KORCZAK 2007" is a presentation of professional and school theatres from Poland and different parts of the world, a place where people of Art meet with children and young people.

"All the activities, meetings and events are prepared for children, young people and teachers, and their purpose is spreading artistic education among the young generation of Poles as well as popularising the educational function of the Theatre.

"The Festival is held in honour of Janusz Korczak (1878-1942) – an outstanding Polish educator with enormous moral authority, who devoted his life and work to children. The moral strength of Janusz Korczak resonates across the society and artistic circles in Poland and all over the world. His ideas integrate adults in creating art for children and young people.

"Following Korczak’s ideals, the organizers of the Festival choose performances that deal with problems relevant to the child, support the fight for children’s rights, raise issues difficult for the child and discuss moral dilemmas".

If you are Lucky to visiting Warsaw in this right moment, do not fail to interest you in this event and to share your feedback on this blog!

Bernard Lathuillere, Paris

More:

• The website, with the last editions 2006 & 2005

• Program [Word, 2 p. 130 Ko, also online]

• More about Janusz Korczak online? It’s a pity.
My feelings for this week are not to describe. The first day I arrived with Martje and her hostfather from Ghana.

It begin for me at Maarthe place. For the first time I met her hostfather from Ghana. I went with him into the city Haalem. For him the first time seeing Holland. What an experience! At them moment I arrived the ''Zeehuis'' I felt home.

People from everywhere came together for the same reason! To know each other and our work, be together and experience all cultures with their own thoughts and way of life. The atmosphere was and is fantastic! I really feel happy. I’ve taken holidays to be here but my coordinator says that if I can present something that is interesting for the team I could get somehow back.

Well the first time I did the family constellations. What an impression! I was very affected and very releafed and that at the first day! It only get better. Good workshop with lot of fun! There is trust and interesting people who give so much energy it is not to describe.

The meals and organisation are also great. Thanks!
I met so many fantastic people!
I thank you all for this week.

Janneke Valkering, Netherlands

Janusz Korczak International Newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04116790736879143467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4233595267484952649.post-30320129823920961702007-09-26T23:59:00.000+02:002007-10-17T01:31:32.509+02:00About the workshop "Creativity of the children”
Bergen aan Zee, The Netherlands

International Janusz Korczak Youth Meeting
Interview of Anouk and Mascha Brink
following their workshop presented on September 23
IJK News, Ewelina Mianowska

EM: Hello! I’m Ewelina Mianowska. I’m from the french association of Janusz Korczak. I wanted do make an interview with you about the workshop that we did today together. Can you present yourself at the beginning?
AB: I’m Anouk Brink and I’m professional educator. Right now, I’m working as the pre-school teacher. I’m working with the young children, from 2 to 4 years old. Before that, I was a family councillor. I’m also a mother of two young children. And I’m member of the Dutch Association of Janusz Korczak.
MB: I’m Mascha Brink. I’m art therapist. I also work with the children in the primary school having emotional behavior problems. I also work as a psychomotion coach where I use the gateways as in workshops.

EM: So, we did together a lot of activities during this workshop. How did you make your decision when you are choosing the activities? What was the idea behind that?
AB: We wanted to offer people the experience to do the exercises themselves, but also that they are able to do that with the children together. So that is why we picked the crayons and the water paintings because they can never go wrong and that s of course very important for children. The same is with the clay, you can always see something in figure that you made. And of course the gateways, there are 36 different patterns so we had to choose the most impressive for the children. Like strong as a bear, angry as a tiger. So animals that the children will like and that they will understand.
MB: We wanted to give the participants of workshop this feeling of connection with themselves, their creativity, and their childhood. So express themselves, be like the children, play, make fun and see that they can do the same things with kids.

EM: And you were also saying that the origin of this project came from Mrs Or Bagin, an isrealien woman living in Holland. How did you meet her?
AB: We know her for a long, long time and we started to do classes with her. And she developed this method through the years that we were students with her. She was then like a friend of us.

EM: Yes, this project is very interesting. I enjoyed it very much, and I think my colleagues also. But we are adult. How do children react?
AB: Usually, they enjoy doing that. They are less hesitant. Like adults who are hesitating They are asking themselves: Can I do that? Can I use my voice? Can I scream? Can I make a funny sound? Children don’t need this encouragement, they will just do that. But of course with the adults you can go to the deeper parts. For children it s much more difficult and you have to keep it short.

EM: And where you’re doing this kind of activities? At schools or as the extra activities?
AB: Mostly, it’s as the extra activities. It’s not yet at schools.

EM: And the last question, how do you see Korczak in this kind of activities?
AB: For me, it starts with what Korczak said: "you have to learn to know yourself before you can educate children." All the things we were doing over here, it’s a way of getting to know yourself much more better. He also says that you have to have a contact with the child in yourself like the book "being little again", imagine how it is being a child. Then you know how the child speaks, etc. For me, there is a connection. And of course Korczak was always busy with the theatre, music. So he would say, that is very interesting to do this kind of things with children. Playing, making some kind of theatre, when you are playing animals.

EM: Thank you very much for this short interview and for that inspiring workshop that you did it with us.

Ewelina, France-Poland

Janusz Korczak International Newshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04116790736879143467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4233595267484952649.post-22161628095819549442007-09-25T18:50:00.001+02:002007-10-17T01:31:32.512+02:00A personal impression
Bergen aan Zee, 4th day

My personal feelings in this international Korczak Youth Conference

Talking with many participants of the Korczak Conference I noticed that all of them were eager to learn from each other. Listening to the presentations of participants from differents countries and working in small groups during the workshops I saw that it gives them inspirations for their own work.

My sceptical thoughts about the future of the International Korczak Mouvement changed. When so many young people (20 - 40 years old) try to use korczak's ideas, there is an enormous chance for the local Janusz Korczak associations and even new ones.

Theo Cappon
President of the J. After the lunch we tried pedagogical activities: making furniture, playing circus, making animations, cooking...

All workshops are leaded by skilled professionals in their field: architects, teachers, artists, etc. I have already learned a lot of things about working with children that I can implement in my work as a psychologist.

Many thanks to Theo, Hans, Reina and all organizational team.
